Wayne’s 4 x 2 (10/10/2024): ‘His Three Daughters’, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and MORE!

Do you want something to watch but aren’t sure where to start?

2SER’s entertainment wizard, Wayne Massingham is back and he’s got you covered with his reviews of the latest and greatest in film, music and television.

It’s Wayne’s 4 by 2! 4 Reviews, 2 minutes each. Here’s what he had for us this morning:

Film: His Three Daughters

Featuring Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen as the titular three daughters, this film follows these characters as they return home to take care of their father Vincent who is battling with cancer. His inevitable passing away hangs as a stressor over all their heads as they accuse each of the reasons why they came to his aid. This movie is directed by Azazel Jacobs, known for French Exit (2020); and the cinematography is captured by the exceptional Sam Levy of Lady Bird (2017), Wendy and Lucy (2015), and Frances Ha (2012).

His Three Daughters is now available on Netflix. Watch the trailer here.

TelevisionOne Day

Adapted from David Nicholls’ novel of the same name is Netflix’s One Day (2024). Dexter and Emma meet on the day of their university graduation, spending the night together in a way you might not expect. They spark up a relationship and from that day on they weave in and out of each other’s life. The dynamic of their relationship changes over the years, moving between being together, to friends, to something in the middle. If you liked the series Normal People (2020) you’ll definitely like this English — and a little bit happier — rendition.

One Day is now available on Netflix. Watch the trailer here.

Television: Mary and George

Mary and George (2024) is based on the real life events of Mary and George Villiers from the Jacobean era. This show explores how Mary (played by the wonderful Julianne Moore) uses her son, George (the up-and-coming Nick Galitzine), to keep her position of power in upper-class England after becoming a widow. She indulges in King James’ sexual desires, offering her son as a pawn in this game.

Mary and George is now available on Binge and Foxtel. Watch the trailer here.

Album: NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28340 DEAD Godspeed You! Black Emperor

NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28340 DEAD is the eighth studio album by veteran Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Titled for the number of Palestinian deaths by Israeli strikes between October 7 2023 and 13 February 2024 in the Israel-Hamas War, Godspeed You! Black Emperor continue their outspokenness against the military industrial complex, as they have been since their inception in the mid-90s. This album has a more beautiful sound featuring heavy guitar underscored by strings and a solid drum line at its heart with songs that rise to ecstatic peak before releasing.

NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28340 DEAD is available on Spotify and Bandcamp.
