Film: After Sun

Written and directed by Charlotte Wells comes a story about an 11 year-old Scottish girl named Sophie (Frankie Corio) and her holiday with her father (Paul Mescal) at a Turkish resort. Exploring the relationship between father and daughter and examining the nature of depression, joy and life through a series of scenarios that has more to do with mood than plot, After Sun has been named on of the best films of 2022 and received Academy Award Nominations for Best Actor for both Corio and Mescal.

Series: Bad Sisters

In present day Dublin five sisters are under interrogation for insurance fraud. Grace’s controlling husband John Paul has died and the cause is anything but clear. Shifting between timelines, before John’s death reveals his abusive behavior and the schemes of the five sisters to free themselves from his domineering presence. This Irish black comedy is set to begin is second series later this year making it a perfect time to jump in on the story.

Film: Close

Directed by Lukas Dhont is a film about the tender relationship between two teen boys and the stigma that comes from acting out of joint with social expectations. Léo and Rémi are 13 year old best friends living in rural Belgium and have a deep and affection relationship with each other. They sleep in the same bed, and are inseparable. Things start to change once they enter high school and are preyed upon by classmates for appearing like a gay couple. The fallout from these experiences, of being perceived a certain way or feeling that someone is watching drives a wedge between the boys with devastating results.

Album: 7s, Avery Tare

7s is the 4th solo album from Avery Tare, the co-founder of the experimental pop group Animal Collective. Bringing the more abstract ad intense sounds from his work on Animal Collective into 7s, Tare’s latest collection of songs was initially demoed in 2020 before being recorded in Ashfield, North Carolina a year later. The 7 tracks have a lot to listen to, with Tare’s characteristic imaginative and dense music offering new ways to expand your consciousness. If you are a fan of Animal Collective this album is a no brainier; get it into your ears immediately!
