Do you want something to watch but aren’t sure where to start?
2SER’s entertainment wizard, Wayne Massingham is back and he’s got you covered with his reviews of the latest and greatest in film, music and television.
It’s Wayne’s 4 by 2! 4 Reviews, 2 minutes each. Here’s what he had for us this morning:
Film: Alien: Romulus
Alien: Romulus (2024) is the seventh film in the “Alien” franchise. This rendition is directed by Fede Alvarez , “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” (2018) and “Evil Dead” (2013), and features the new and upcoming Cailee Spaeny, “Priscilla” (2023) and “Civil War” (2024). Set in a world vibrantly moulded by previous directors, Rain’s (Spaeny) exploration of an abandoned space station leads to the discovery of another threat to humanity.
Now showing in cinemas, watch the trailer here.
Television: Dr Death
A true crime anthology, Dr Death (2021), tells the story of a different medical professional each season who use their field in controversial and criminal ways. Season 1 follows American neurosurgeon Christoper Duntsch who was accused of killing two patients, and Season 2 tracks Italian surgeon Paolo Macchiarini convicted of using his patients as test subjects. Think “American Crime Story” but solely about the twisted minds of the medical professionals we hold so much trust for.
Dr Death is now available on Stan. Watch the trailer here.
Television: Justified: City Primeval
Justified: City Primeval (2023) is a neo-Western series based on Elmore Leonard’s novel “City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit” published in the sci-fi boom of the 1980s. An addition to the “Justified” series, City Primeval follows police officer, Raylan Givens’, attempt to track down The Oklahoma Wildman. Only an eight episode season, Justified: City Primeval will quench the thirst of those who love a modern crime story with traditional elements.
Justified: City Primeval is available now on Disney+. Watch the trailer here.
Album: Sorcs 80, Osees
One of Wayne’s favourite bands on the planet, Osees released their 29th album earlier this month: Sorcs 80. Osees is a garage-rock band that got their start in San Francisco in 1997, and is led by John Dwyer. Despite the heavy guitar sounds that characterise Osees’ psychedelic and alternative music, they don’t use a lead guitar. Instead, they fore-front samples and saxophones which keep their music genre-pushing and ground-breaking, still pummeling in Osees style.
