Film: A Different Man
A24’s back at it again with yet another thought-provoking movie, A Different Man (2024). This movie follows Edward Lemuel (Sebastian Stan) who has neurofibromatosis, a genetic disease that manifests as tumours on his face. He undergoes an experimental surgery that completely changes the way he looks, so he decides to adopt a new identity under the name “Guy Moratz”. Chaos ensues and his old identity haunts him to the point where he maybe wants it back.
Now showing in cinemas, watch the trailer here.
Television: Baby Reindeer
Baby Reindeer (2024) is a seven-episode mini series released on Netflix earlier this year. It’s about a Donny (Richard Gadd, also the creator) who finds himself questioning whether he is being stalked by Martha (Jessica Gunning). He only knows Martha from once giving her a free drink at his work, but she keeps visiting whenever he has a shift. Her connection to him keeps growing, but it doesn’t seem to be mutual. This show was met with widespread acclaim for its moral ambiguities, realistic portrayals, and character development.
Baby Reindeer is now available on Netflix. Watch the trailer here.
Television: The Big Cigar
The Big Cigar (2024) is a Don Cheadle classic based on a 2012 Playboy article. Set in the 1970s, it follows Huey P Newtown, a founder of the Black Panther Party, as he tries to evade the FBI after committing a violent crime. He enlists the help of Bert Schneider (Alessandro Nivola), an activist turned producer, to help him navigate his way through these obstacles.
The Big Cigar is now available on AppleTV+. Watch the trailer here.
Album: Patterns in Repeat by Laura Marling
Patterns in Repeat is the latest album from English Singer/Songwriter Laura Marling. Although it is her eighth studio album in fifteen years, the high quality of her music has remained remarkably consistent. Written and recorded after the birth of her daughter, Patterns in Repeat is somewhat more tender and personal than her previous work, but remains a worth addition to her catalogue.
Patterns in Repeat is available on Bandcamp and Spotify
