Television: Irma Vep

This comedy-drama follows an American actress, played by Alicia Vikander, who opts to work on a more authentic television production based in Paris after being disaffected with her Hollywood blockbusters. Taking on the titular role of Irma Vep, the show is a remake of the French silent film series “Les Vampires” from 1915. That’s just the start; this series is a meta examination and indulgence in the art of movie making and cinema itself, being the product of director Oliver Assayas love of movie making. He previously directed another film called “Irma Vep” in 1996 and this series incorporates both his previous film and the originally 1915 silent film serial. Its mind mindbogglingly good television.

Film: Living

From director Oliver Hermanus comes in 1953 about a lonely civil servant (Bill Nighy) who’s doctor informs him that he doesn’t have long to live. Looking to live his life to the fullest he meets a young woman’s (Aimee Lou Wood) who’s vigor for life inspires in him a similar resolution to not let his last moments go to waste. Living is a new adaption of the 1952 Japanese film Ikiru directed by Akira Kurosawa, spinning an English twist on the classic tale.

Living is in cinemas now. Watch the trailer here.

Television: Summer Love

This 8 episodes comedy-drama series is an anthology tale of a summer house rented by different people, each with a problem and issue with love. The ensemble piece features the talents of Patrick Brammall, Harriet Dyer, Stephen Curry, Nazeem Hussain, Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope, just to name a few. As some characters cross over into each other’s stories and other tales stick to themselves, Summer Love is an examination of what love means today to many different people.
