Television: The Last of Us

Based on the best selling video game by Naught Dog Studios, this series is set in a post apocalyptic earth ravaged by a mutated form of the cordyceps  virus, which has jumped from infecting insects to humans and mutated their brains into hideous fungus creatures. It stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, a grizzled survivor who is tasked with protecting and escorting Ellie, played by Bella Ramsay, to a safe haven as she is the only human who seems to be immune from the virus. Featuring powerful performances and shocking horror as well as beauty, The Last of Us is an addictive watch and has a confirmed second season on the way.

Television: Colin From Accounts

Its the age old story; boy sees girl, girl flashes boy, boy hits a dog with his car. Gordon (Patrick Brammall) and Ashley (Harriet Dyer) are two single, funny and slightly selfish people who are brought together to take care of the dog they ran over, who they name Colin. While Colin heals up, Gordon and Ashley find themselves draw and repulsed by each other. This Aussie rom-com swept the 2023 Logies and is one of Australian television’s finest comedy work in years.

Album: Haunted Mountain, Buck Meek

The third solo album from Buck Meek is a laidback folk and country affair, full of gentle and soothing guitar work and vocals. Meek is a notable guitarist for the band Big Thief, but here he turns down the noise and energy for a more relaxed and intimate record about memory, love songs about his wife and sings with a higher pitched voice to echo the tone of the album. Partly recorded with Jolie Holland, who co wrote the title track Haunted Mountain, both enjoyed the name so much that they are each realeasing an album with the same title. Amazing stuff.

Haunted Mountain is out now on Spotify and Bandcamp.
