Need something to watch over the weekend but not sure where to start? Want to listen to something but don’t quite know what?

Wayne Massingham is here to save you with his weekly recommendations in film, music, and television.

Film: I’m Still Here

A gripping political biographical drama, directed by Walter Salles and based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s 2015 memoir of the same name. Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro star as Eunice Paiva, a mother and activist coping with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), during the military dictatorship in Brazil in the 1970s.

I’m Still Here is available in selected cinemas. Watch the trailer here.

Television: No Good Deed

This dark 8-episode comedy follows the sale of Paul and Lydia’s picture-perfect LA home, which forces them to face painful family secrets – and hide them from prying eyes and cutthroat buyers. Three very different families then vie to buy the 1920s Spanish style villa that they think will solve all their problems.

No Good Deed is available on Netflix.

Film: The Seed of the Sacred Fig

Family bonds unravel and generations clash in this extaordinary drama from acclaimed filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof. Shot in secret and resulting in the persecution of its director, who was eventually forced to flee Iran, the film combines gripping storytelling with real-life footage of recent protests in Iran, capturing a family’s turmoil amid a society in upheaval.

The Seed of the Sacred Fig is in selected cinemas. Watch the trailer here.

Album: Panda Bear – Sinister Grift

Noah Lennox is a member of Animal Collective, and this is his first solo album in five years, recorded in Lisbon where he’s now based. It’s slow moving and filled with bright melodic songs, with a touch of melancholy.

Sinister Grift is avalaible on Bandcamp and Youtube.
