What role does ‘Australia Day’ Play in 2021?
Today is the 26th of January, which many call Australia Day, and others recognise as a day of invasion, mourning or survival. A day to acknowledge and recognise the past, and its impacts on the present and also the future. A day to connect with the land we live on, and the people that are around us. It will be looking different this year, with many events either being cancelled, or streamed at a distance because of the pandemic.
2SER Breakfast’s Alex James spoke with Yvonne Weldon, a local Wiradjuri woman, Deputy Chair of the Australia Day Council of New South Wales, and Chair of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council following the Dawn Service about what today means to her.
