Why is the Government Reopening the Christmas Island Detention Centre?

Australia is ranked 20th in the world for refugee resettlement, according to the Australian Refugee Council, well below countries like Turkey and Uganda. Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced last week that the government was planning on reopening the Christmas Island offshore detention centre “to deal with the prospect of arrivals as well as dealing with the prospect of transfers.”

To discuss the implications of reopening the centre, we were joined by Dr Daniel Ghezelbash, Senior Lecturer at Macquarie Law School and special counsel at the National Justice Project.
