Why Surveillance Cameras Will Not Prevent Abuse in Aged Care Facilities
Last Sunday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the Government’s decision to ask the Governor General to establish a Royal Commission into the aged care sector. Distressing footage has recently been aired on television of staff in aged care facilities roughly handling their elderly residents, in some cases striking and suffocating them. Some of these cases have been taken to court, with footage captured by secret cameras being used as evidence, but experts have warned that surveillance cameras will not prevent the abuse in nursing homes. Graham Sewell, professor of Management and Associate Dean of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne, joined us to talk about workplace surveillance.
