Yours, Mine & Femme! Ep. 11 – Cinderella, a feminist vehicle throughout the ages
You may think that Cinderella and ‘feminist’ don’t mesh together, but even before Amazon’s recent progressive remake, Cindy has had a feminist edge! Drive EP Bella Michie sat down with Dr Alexander Sergeant for Portsmouth University to learn about Cindy’s radical feminist roots
“Cinderella has functioned as a feminist throughout its history because it is a story that has been told primarily by women, for women, within ‘feminine spheres’ of society”
According to Dr Sergeant, fairytales were the only avenue for women’s voices during a time men were the authors of history. Fairytales were oral tales that belonged to the household through which women could share stories that mattered to them.
‘Yours, Mine & Femme’ is a segment in which we put a spotlight on issues affecting women of all ages, cultures, sexualities and abilities. To catch up on past YMF episodes or to make sure you don’t miss a story, follow us on Instagram and Twitter @YMF_2SER
