Zika Virus Research
Historically the Zika infection of humans has been restricted to Africa and Asia but since 2013 an unprecedented expansion has taken place. Zika has been affecting a number of countries and territories in the western Pacific, resulting in outbreaks of hundreds or thousands of suspected cases. Thankfully, a research report conducted by Australian scientists has shown common local mosquitoes aren’t able to spread the Zika virus. Dr Andrew van den Hurk Supervising Scientist in Entomology at the Forensic and Scientific Services at Health Support Queensland, who was also one of the researchers behind the report; spoke to The Daily about the report’s findings.
