In recovery mode from 2SER’s recent 45th Birthday celebrations so doing a double-post this week, with much to catch up on from the world of music!

First up this week, is our feature album, Behold, by Naarm’s art-pop freestylers Parsnip. The followup to their 2019 album “When The Tree Bears Fruit”, it’s a wildly creative (and collaborative) sophomore record that combines childlike playfulness and musical maturity with an attempt to make sense of a disorientating world.

Naarm sister-duo Charm of Finches have been garnering attention both locally and overseas in recent years for their arresting sound, taking in ethereal vocal duets. Marlinchen in the Snow, their second studio outing,  and takes the instrumentation up a notch in comparison to their more choral earlier work. Imbued with a pop sensibility and pulse, this is and excellent dose of dreamy chamber-folk that lyrically reflects on life on the road, themes of home and belonging as well as the fragility of relationships. This also is the final release on long-running  label Spunk! Records, a mainstay of the Australian music scene founded by former 2ser presenter Aaron Curnow.

Further afield, Maria Chiara Argirò has just dropped her fourth record – Closer – a broad scope electronic record that interweaves elements of jazz, classical, techno, ambient and found sound sampling. It’s a great return from the Rome-born, London-based producer, singer and composer.

This week also saw the hotly anticipated release of the new Ibibio Sound Machine studio album, the London-based group fronted by London-Born Nigerian vocalist Eno Williams as well as Australian horn-player and keyboardist Max Grunhard. Pull the Rope is a slamming  record of spaced out funk, hypnotic disco and afro-infused post-punk. Cascading synthesisers and a pulsing, rhythmic dancefloor focus are present all the way. Ibibio actually popped by the 2SER Ibibio moseyed on through 2SER breakfast back in March when in the country to play Womadelaide.

A single about “bad blokes doing bad things, and the fallout that follows” , Time Inside, the new single from local four-piece Royston Vasie, is a beautifully realised piece of alternative Australiania and offers a final entree from their new album, which is set to arrive in a matter of weeks.

A welcome return this last week to is from London-based singer/songwriter Nilufer Yanya, with her first new music since 2022’s  Painless LP (a feature album on 2ser). Reconnecting with her longterm creative partner Wilma Archer (who co-produced both of Yanya’s albums),  Like I Say (I runaway) is an excellent dose of melancholy laced indie rock that is:

About how you choose to spend your time. Time is like a currency, every moment. You’re never going to get it back. It’s quite an overwhelming thing to realise.”

On that note I’m out of here, have a great weekend and keep your ears out for all these and more on your local community radio station!
