We Need to Talk About Incest

Content Warning: Discussion of sexual and familial abuse.

Incest is one of Australia’s most hidden and yet abusive crimes. Not only does incest seem to occur at a young age, in some cases it pervades into adulthood. As a result of its stigma, incest also seems to carry a prolonged duration of non-reporting, with a study in 2012 finding that the average time for Australian women to report their horrific stories is 31 years. So what can we learn more about this shocking reality, and how can we encourage those who are victims of it to report and stand up for themselves without fear? The Daily was joined by Senior Lecturer in Criminology at WSU Michael Salter, to discuss the issue.
