Eora/Sydney based singer-songwriter Laura Jean provides the feature album for the next week on 2SER with her latest record, Amateurs. The album is a bittersweet reflection on her role as a songwriter and the harsh realities of being an artist, set in a sweet spot between her folk-focused past and more recent synth-pop stylings. Produced in the thick of the 2021 lockdown with Tim Bruniges, Amateurs is Laura Jean’s first album since 2018’s Devotion. Check it out here.
Close your eyes and escape into the fresh, funky, and fantastic record that is Narrm multi-instrumentalist Don Glori’s debut album: Welcome. With Brazillian rhythms similar to that of Airto Moreira, the experimental flair of Sun Ra, and the piano chops of Herbie Hancock, the album has been described as “the kind of record that will translate equally to both the dance floor and the lounge room rug”. So invite some friends over, drink some cocktails, and give Welcome the attuned listening it deserves.
Lisa Richards delicate and sweet voice soars with impressive power in the Melbourne-based singer-songwriter’s
8th album Waiting to Fly. Richards tells raw and soulful stories of loss, love, and longing in an incredibly unique and engaging way. Check out the album here.
Way Dynamic have released their debut album So Familiar. The Melbourne-based polymath Dylan Young has displayed his musical prowess by creating an easy-riding album filled with a gentle lyrical presence and an emphasise on harmony guitars and jazz undertones. The standout songs for me have to be ‘Not a fan’, ‘Just Begun’, and ‘Marion’. Give it a listen here.
British-Columbian-based band Mother Sun is back with their 3rd Album, Train of Thought. The mellow stoner psych and idiosyncratic pop that oozes from this album provides the perfect soundtrack for any stoner on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Any fans of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and the Uplifting Bell Ends should most definitely give this album a listen here.
Local Sydney duo Salarymen have just released their second EP Head in the Sand. This collection of independently produced indie jams clearly highlights the emerging talent of Renee de la Motte and Thom Eagleton. With rich soundscapes perfect for gazing out the window on a long road trip, the EP is reminiscent of bands like The Strokes, Wet Leg, and Lime Cordiale. Listen to the album here.
Pictures of You is a newly released musical gem of a song lifted from Hiding in Plain Sight, Drugdealer’s most recent album. With beautifully soft vocals from Kate Bollinger, plenty of warbling Rhodes keys, and a tangy guitar solo, Pictures of you is a stunningly simple song that exemplifies the power of empty space in music.
