The genre of crooning isn’t one that you hear a lot of today, but in the mid-1900’s it was one of the most popular styles around. Crooning gave us musicians like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole- so why do I know nothing about it?

After hearing crooning in a movie (and in every other Christmas carol) I went straight to the source: Greg Poppleton, Australia’s only authentic 1920s-30s singer and host of The Phantom Dancer on 2SER. I asked Greg to explain to me what crooning is, how it came to be, and why it is so synonymous (at least in my mind) with “the most wonderful time of the year”. And he well and truly delivered, not only explaining to me in extreme depth the background of crooning, but even giving me a demonstration of how to actually sing it!
