The Adult Consequences of Childhood Trauma
Childhood trauma is more common than you may think, with 45,000 reported cases of Australian children exposed to maltreatment in 2015 and 2016.
Trauma experienced during our childhood can have a negative impact on the way our brains develop during our transition into adulthood. Reports show that there are higher rates of mental illness in adults who have experienced childhood maltreatment, contributing to increased drug use and dependence. But not all children react this way, as prior influences, genes, coping responses and brain regulation will impact on how you deal with these stressful experiences.
Psychologist and associate lecturer at Macquarie University, Dr Sarah Baracz chatted with Nic on the consequences of childhood trauma. If you know anyone who has suffered childhood trauma and needs support, call the Blue Knot helpline on 1300 657 380 or go to their website.
