Nuclear Fusion Hits New High

Solar power may be one of the green energy sources on everyone’s minds, but have you ever thought of cutting out the middle man and just having your own personal sun? Fusion energy is just that; a nuclear energy source that uses processes similar to what keeps the sun glowing to generate electricity.

China’s Institute of Plasma Physics announced recently that their Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (aka. EAST) reached 100 Million degrees Celsius, a milestone for the technology. Nuclear Fusion follows the same processes as the sun to generate energy, and in theory may be the future of energy due to the simplicity of the elements required as fuel.

It’s been just over two years since Sean spoke with Richard Garrett from the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) about Nuclear Fusion on the Daily, and in that time, a lot has progressed in the field. We had Richard back on Breakfast with Sean to talk more about how things are shaping up for our new artificial suns.
