Breakthrough in Stillbirth research
Everyday in Australia 6 pregnancies are terminated due to stillbirth. This translates to almost 1 in every 100 pregnancies resulting in the death of a baby.
But Lauriete professor Roger Smith from the University of Newcastle and his team based at the Hunter medical research institute are responsible for a breakthrough into the mysterious cause of Stillbirth.
They have found that many stillbirths are caused by the premature deterioration of placentas. If this discovery wasn’t enough they have already begun research into creating a test for this condition.
