When a cancer cell becomes multi-drug resistant

More than 44,000 people died from cancer in 2014 making it the second most common cause of death in Australia that year, accounting for 3 in 10 deaths.

Research and treatments for cancer are improving, however a common issue that has the medical community concerned is when people develop multi-drug resistances to cancer.

These resistances prevent people from recovering as the cancer cells become immune to the effects of treatment.

However, research undertaken by Mary Bebawy at the University of Technology Sydney is focusing attention on extracellular vesicles, the part of a cell that will shed from it’s mother cancer cell, and how they might provide clues for future cancer treatments.

Speakers:

Mary Bebawy – Professor of Pharmacy in the Graduate School of Health at the University of Technology Sydney.

Producer: Jake Morcom.
