FRANK

After Sinatra left the Tommy Dorsey orchestra he became resident singer on a radio show that had started in 1936 called 'Your Hit Parade'. Mainly aimed at housewives aged 25 - 50, producers noticed that when Sinatra started on the show, more and more teenage girls began turning up at the studio for the broadcast. Pop music wasn't aimed at the teenage market, yet teenage girls known as 'bobbysoxers', wearing white socks rolled down to the ankles, came to swoon to the crooner. On this week's Phantom Dancer, we hear some of these Sinatra 'Your Hit Parade' broadcasts and rehearsals from 1943, and from his low point in 1949.

PARAMOUNT

Sinatra sang his first solo concert in 1942 at New York City's home of big band shows, the Paramount Theatre. Bobbysoxers queued for blocks to get in. They screamed when Sinatra walked on stage. Sinatra said the stamping, yelling and screaming of 5,000 teenage girls 'scared him stiff'. No singer had ever been screamed at en masse with such adulation. Marketing types saw a new market to sell product to - the teen market - and the Paramount stank of urine from all the overly excited girls.
