The Thread :: 2:00pm 15th Jan 2019

The Thread links one song to the next and then that one to the next one, etc etc, taking twists and turns along the way.

This week’s thread links songs about humans and people and covering and all sorts of other things.

The Thread starts with Londoner Lyla Foy – ‘Only Human’, from the album Mirrors The Sky.  From there, it is off to Scotland for The Beta Band, then back to England for Daughter.

From there, it is across the pond to the USA for Cat Power, Big Thief and Sunflower Bean.  Then back to Australia for the amazing Cash Savage & The Last Drinks.  From there, it is The Cramps!

From songs about Humans, to the band The Human League, who hail from Sheffield.  So does the magnificent Richard Hawley (you might recognise the song ‘Tonight The Streets Are Ours’ from several TV shows and movies, including the Banksy documentary), and Pulp (and Richard Hawley was once a touring member of Pulp, as well as recording with Jarvis Cocker as Relaxed Muscle).

From Pulp’s masterpiece ‘Common People’ (which I can never hear enough – great lyrics), it is Matthew Sweet’s Knowing People, before we return to Australia for The Go-Betweens’ ‘People Say’, and then Robert Forster’s ‘The River People’ (from his first solo album ‘Danger in the Past’).

Margaret Chavez is fast becoming a favourite on The Thread.  This is the project of an Austin musician called Marcus Striplin as a tribute to his mother.  The song is called ‘Missing People’ and comes from an album called A Loupe.  It is fabulous.

Then to Ora Cogan, Australian Crawl and Sly & The Family Stone’s Everyday People.

Next The Doors, Alabama Shakes and on to the I Don’t Cares – a project of Juliana Hatfield and Paul Westerberg.

On to Low, Belle & Sebastian and ending that part of The Thread with Depeche Mode’s People Are People.

From there – two Depeche Mode covers – one from Johnny Cash on his American IV recordings (produced by Rick Rubin) ‘Personal Jesus’ (recorded shortly before Johnny’s death) and one from Josh T Pearson (another favourite on The Thread – from Denton, Texas) – ‘Cover Me’.

From Josh T Pearson’s Depeche Mode cover of ‘Cover Me’, we’re on to a live recording of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band in Melbourne early 2017 – ‘Cover Me’ (the high-hat on this is amazing).  Then on to Jason Isbell’s beautiful ‘Cover Me Up’.

From Jason Isbell, it is time for another Jason – Jason Walker and ‘Borrowed Tunes’.  From borrowing to begging – it is Machine Translations’ ‘Beggar In the House of Love’.  Coincidentally, Machine Translations is the project of another Walker – J Walker.

From ‘Beggar in the House of Love’ to The Clouds’ most recent release ‘House of the Sun’.

And so ends another thread.

Hope you enjoy listening!
