European Design’s History in the Modernist Sydney Scene
The Gallery of Sydney has recently begun exploring a modern art mix of Australian and European styling with their exhibit ‘The Moderns: European Designers in Sydney’ . The European influence on the Australian Art Scene has it roots stretching all the way back the the first settlers. While in our own climate Australian art has flourished and taken on new form of its own, the Gallery of Sydney is celebrating an additional infusion of European influence. The exhibition combines a unique mixture of photographs from the archive of one of Australia’s most revered photographers Max Dupain with original furniture, design objects and art. The aim of the event is to highlight the hurtles, victories and influence of the European furniture makers, designers and architects working in Sydney between the 1930s and 1960s. Here to talk to us about this new exhibition is the Curator for The Moderns: European Designers in Sydney, Rebecca Hawcroft.
