From Closure to New Purpose: Post-Mining in Regional Australia

As mines continue shutting down in Australia, mining experts say there is a need to transition to an acceptable land use after mining ceases.

Evaluating and planning post-mining economies requires the collaborative effort of all stakeholders involved to ensure positive outcomes for local residents.

That’s according to the Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies, who research and implement strategies underpinning challenges in mining closures.  

The Wire’s Toni Pankaluic reported at the World Mining Congress and spoke with Fiona Haslam-McKenzie, Program Lead for Regional Socio-Economic Development from the Cooperative Research Centre, to gain an insight in successful mining closures and repurposing within regional Australia.
