Government Interference in Moss’ Live Export Report

Two weeks ago, public sector investigator Philip Moss finally handed down his review into the Live Export Trade.

And while the report (also known as the “Moss Report” for those in the know) appeared a highly critical analysis of the industry, some might even say ‘damning’ – it has been revealed that some initial and highly significant criticisms were left out.

Greens Senator for NSW, Mehreen Faruqi obtained documents that showed over 200 suggested edits were made by the Department of Agriculture on Moss’ first draft, after Moss sought consultation from the Department prior to publication.

The fact that Moss convened with the government before the report’s release, and that the government successfully altered the document itself has more than raised a few eyebrows.

On top of this, former crime commissioner John Lawler announced he would not be able to continue his inquiry into the Live Export Trade due to whistleblower protection laws. Opposers have called the news of the Moss report and the premature end of the Lawler inquiry ‘disappointing’ and say the government’s actions reveal a culture of dishonesty and deception.
