International Mother Language Day with Dr Anikó Hatoss

21st February is International Mother Language Day, celebrating and preserving differences in cultures and fostering tolerance and respect for others.

Multilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge. It’s a pillar of intergenerational learning, however linguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages disappear in the world. Did you know there are around 7000 languages spoken in the world and half of them are threatened by extinction?

Newer/ developed societies have less dialects than cutural societies linked with biodiveristy. Dr Anikó Hatoss, Associate Professor in Linguistics and Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at the School of Humanities and Languages at UNSW joined 2SER Breakfast to give us more interesting facts and to discuss the importance of language.

Find out more at Cyberspora: Multilingual Communities Online and as part of Dr Anikó Hatoss’ published work, Everyday Multilingualism – Linguistic Landscapes as Practice and Pedagogy.
