Lithium mining plans in Serbia from Rio Tinto provoke local unrest
Since July 2024, multi-national mining company, Rio Tinto, has provoked strong local disapproval with their proposed lithium mine in Northern Serbia.
Opponents accuse Rio Tinto and the Serbian government of ignoring the environmental and social impacts of the mine, including ruining local water supplies, agriculture, and social order.
Protestors and activists have faced cases of police brutality, raids, and even personal death threats.
The Wire’s contributor Jahan Rezakhanlou talked with Green-Left and frontline campaigner, Aleksandar Matković about Rio Tinto, and the reaction from the local Serbian people.
