Loss of Boarding Houses as Affordable Accommodation
As the Sydney property market tightens, squeezing out renters from affordable housing, the not for profit Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is trying hard to advocate for the protection of what’s left of Boarding Housing stocks in Sydney, and especially in the Inner West.
According to latest research, Sydney and the Inner West holds the largest number of boarding House types of accommodation, some 250 of them.
Despite what can be said as a bad reputation when it comes to renters rights, boarding houses dotting inner city suburbs in Sydney, still fill an essential gap – low income housing especially for the vulnerable.

She explains the current state of play for many boarding House residents, following the unfortunate death of 3 boarding house residents from a recent fire in the suburb of Newtown.
