New Music with Steph Liong
Steph Liong is back with all the new music you need to know about this week!
The first two albums of the 74-year-old godfather of Ethio-jazz, Mulatu Astatke, have been reissued as Afro Latin Soul volumes 1 and 2. The original albums came out in 1966 and give a real insight into Mulatu’s experimentations with this sound. You’ll find a blend of ethiopian music, modern jazz, afro funk, latin rhythms and caribbean reggae.
Closer to home, we have Sydney’s very own Darren Cross, who you may know from Gerling and Jep and Dep fame. He has just released his second solo album, Peacer which features a wonderful smattering of styles, from gospel and guitar pop to neo-folk and finger picking. It is a beautiful record that can be found exclusively on Bandcamp.
Finally, Missouri singer/songwriter, Israel Nash, has just released his fifth record, Lifted. It is an album filled with folk, rock and psychedelic touch stones and channels Neil Young. Check out ‘The Widow’ for a taste of his uplifting and fun sound.
