New research links mental Illness and creative industry workers

The image of having a mental illness in the creative industry has seen to become glorified by the media in the past few deades. The truth is, however, that much of this depression, anxiety and various other mental illnesses have actually been caused by the outcome of working in this workforce.

Throughout generations, artists have always been linked to mental health. While most of this image seems to have a romanticised image of the ‘tortured artist’, there seems to be more of a link towards depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses are an outcome from actually working in these creative industries.

What does this mean about the creative industry? And how can this bring more awareness to mental health?

We were joined by Jennifer Anderson, PhD candidate in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne to discuss this issue.
