Northern Ireland’s Civil Unrest Awakened
Since 2016, the world has been saturated by media coverage of Brexit negotiations between the UK and the rest of the EU. However, what remains overlooked is the border tensions between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland that have resulted in civil unrest and violence in the region. Last Thursday 29 year old journalist Lyra McKee was killed after being caught in the crossfire between dissident group the “New” IRA and Northern Irish Police in an attack before the Easter weekend and the anniversary of the 1998 ‘Good Friday Agreement’ peace deal. We were joined by Professor of Political Theory, and expert on British and Irish politics, Professor Adrian Little from the University of Melbourne to unpack this.
