Professional Begging Targeting Cities and Compassion
Last week on Saturday, police arrested seven people in Melbourne’s CBD, for doing what’s known as ‘professional begging’. These elderly Chinese people flew to Melbourne on tourist visas, some already transferring the dollars they got into Chinese yuan. Their actions have raised a lot of concerns as to why this sort of thing happens. One thing’s clear – these professional beggars were taking advantage of people’s goodwill. We could even see something like this in our own Sydney city.
The Daily was joined by Dr Lennon Chang, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Monash University, to learn more about what professional begging is.
