Sydney’s Lockout Laws: Problems and Solutions
The lockout laws introduced by the New South Wales government in response to incidents of alcohol-related violence have been met with increasingly heated opposition in recent weeks, with a rally conducted by the Keep Sydney Open campaign drawing thousands of protestors. Premier Mike Baird continues to defend the legislation, citing a reduction in assaults in the Sydney CBD and Kings Cross since the lockout laws were introduced in 2014. To explore the issues surrounding the existing nightlife legislation, we are joined by Steve Pate, a community campaigner who has written in The Drum about his support for aspects of the lockout laws.
