Chinese Olympic bronze medallist Fu YuanhuiI in Rio shocked audiences with her causal explanation that her cramps were to blame for her third place swim. Not only did audience reactions demonstrate how far we have to go in terms of de-stigmatizing menstrual cycles but it was a quiet tale of tampon use, whereby Fu was able to swim while on her period. Tampons however are still often perceived around a negative stigma.The Daily was joined by Dr Lauren Rosewarne Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne to discuss with us the cultural context surrounding the use of period products.
