Breakthrough Making Corneal Transplantation Easier

About 1700 Aussies undergo a corneal transplantation each year – a procedure that replaces a damaged cornea with a donor’s healthy cornea – and, while more than 90% of cornea transplants are successful, post-operative vision often falls short of 20/20 vision.

But a Sydney surgeon is hoping to change that.

Associate Professor Chandra Bala is an eye surgeon, ophthalmologist and Director of Surgery at PersonalEYES, and he spoke to Tess about a new technique he’s pioneered in performing the first successful corneal transplantation of its kind in the world.
