World Heritage in the Internet Age
When we talk about preserving a heritage site, we often think of protecting it against vandalism, the weather, and so on. But much of the act of preserving heritage sites is simply maintaining the ‘iconic’ status of the site itself: protecting the history, culture, and narrative which inhabits a space.
In the internet age, this task is now much more complex: anyone with a Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram account can produce and publish their own image of an iconic space.
The Daily‘s Sam Baran was joined by Dr Cristina Garduno Freeman, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Australian Centre for Architectural History, Urban and Cultural Heritage of the University of Melbourne, to discuss how heritage sites preserve their site’s image in the internet age.
