Confronting the female scream
Continuing with our International Women’s Day Special, Producer Max Lewis talking to Kusum Normoyle, a Sydney-based artist and experimental musician who combines the violence of noise with the physicality of performance art to create installations that confront the paradigms of the female voice.
From stock sound effects to horror films, the female scream has connotations with extreme emotion, hysteria, fear, and even lack of control.
Screaming in music, however, is typically done by males within the hardcore punk, metal, or noise genres. While some acts, such as that of the Riot Grrl genre, have featured harsh female vocals, they have not reached the prevalence of male-fronted acts.
Kusum Normoyle is a Sydney based artist and experimental musician who, through solo work and art installations, challenges her audiences with a confronting portrayal of the female scream that few have seen before.
Producer Max Lewis spoke to Kusum to find out more about Kusum and her work.
