The Cost of Loving – Episode 5 The Cost of No Longer Loving

This series The Cost of Loving has highlighted how much romantic love is intertwined with consumption.

Romantic consumption begins with dating and flourishes when we get engaged, married, and during the time of our relationships.  We spend about $5 000 a year when we are dating, the average cost to get engaged is in the vicinity of $15 000, and getting married costs us something between $36 000 and $50 000 on average.  We also spend quite a lot of money to celebrate our love on occasions like Valentine’s Day, wedding anniversaries, or just during our relationships or marriages.

But what does happen when relationships are no longer fulfilling? What does happen and how much does it cost to separate or divorce? This is what the last episode of this series is looking at.
