It’s Wayne’s 4 by 2! 4 Reviews, 2 minutes each. Here’s what he had for us this morning;
Film: Zone of Interest
This historical drama from director Jonathan Glazer chronicles the life of Rudolf Höss, the Nazi commandant of the Auschwitz concertation camp, as he builds an idyllic dream home with his wife and family next door to the Jewish extermination facilities. The daily routine of Höss’s lifestyle with his family shockingly contrasts with the depravity of his work as a Nazi executioner, which Höss completes with a utter banality. A stunning portrait of the inhumanity and evil that can exist alongside a “normal” life has seen Zone of Interest sweep awards, being nominated for five Academy Awards, winning three BAFTAS and three Golden Globes. Steven Spielberg has called it “the best Holocaust movie I’ve witnessed since my own. It’s doing a lot of good work in raising awareness, especially about the banality of evil.”
Zone of Interest is in cinemas now. Watch the trailer here.
Television: Platonic
This comedy series reunites Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne (Bad Neighbours) in a hilariously abrasive friendship. Slyvia (Byrne) and Will (Rogen) are former best friends who reunite after they each have a mid-life crisis. Having not seen each other for many years after a falling out, their reunion is tinged with unresolved conflicts and trust issues, and the more they see each other the more wildly their lives start to spin out of control.
Platonic is out now on AppleTV+. Watch the trailer here.
Television: Extraordinary
A take on the superhero coming of age story, this comedy series follows Máiréad Tyers as Jen, a 25-year old who hasn’t received any super powers in a world where everyone gets an ability once they reach 18 years of age. The central mystery and comedy around Jen’s attempt to discover why she’s powerless is a fun subversion and reworking of superhero themes. With a second season confirmed, now is great time to find out why this series is extraordinary.
Extraordinary is out now on Disney+. Watch the trailer here.
Album: Daniel, Real Estate
Real Estate’s 6th album can be best described as quintessentially indie rock. Recorded in Nashville at RCA Studios with the help of GRAMMY winning producer Daniel Tashian, Daniel features the hallmarks of Real Estates strengths, like great melodies and harmonies that wash all over you. Martin Courtney is leading the band as usual, and while he doesn’t steer the group into a breaking new sound, he firmly cements the group’s solid indie rock credentials over 11 tracks. If you’re a Real Estate fan or want to explore their sound, this is a great album to pick up.
