Television: Best Interest
Michael Sheen and Sharon Horgan star as parents with a daughter who’s fighting a life threatening illness. As the illness worsens, both parents become embroiled in battle over their child’s right to her suffering and her doctor’s reluctance for euthanasia. A hard drama to watch but stunningly brave and anchoring by incredible performances, Best Interests is a drama well worth the heart-ache.

Film: Fallen Leaves
Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s latest film is a romantic dramedy about two people falling into a romance in modern day Helsinki. Ansa is a supermarket worker and Holappa is a equally lonely sandblaster. On a chance encounter through mutual friends at a karaoke bar, they take a liking to each other. Through a series of misunderstandings and happenstance, the romance between the two is thwarted, reignited and lost again before, ultimately, landing on (somewhat) solid ground.

Television: Blue Lights
Set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, this series follows 3 rookie police officers of the fictional Blackthorn Station as they navigate the immense pressures of the job. 40 year old Grace joins the police after years of working as a social worker but wonders of the career change was right, and probationary officers Anne and Tommy also face significant challenges in keeping their district safe from crime.

Album: Where We’ve been, Where we go from Here, Friko
The Chicago Duo’s debut album is 9 track’s of medolic indie rock with dramatic flourishes. Making a lot of noise, both in the music scene and on this record, Friko channel the energy of some great early 2000’s bands like Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire. Dramatic and intense instrumentation that feels like a 16 person big band performance, with a heaping plenty of powerful vocals, the songs on this record build and burst forth, crashing down all around your ears in the best way possible.
