Is Coconut Oil Really a Superfood?
In the realm of health and superfoods, coconut oil has been hailed as the elixir of the heavens. It’s been dubbed as the world’s healthiest oil, due to its high content of lauric acid, a fatty acid that mimics healthy unsaturated fats by boosting the “good” cholesterol. However, in a health advisory released this week by the American Heart Association, highlighting the relationship between dietary saturated fats, present in coconut oil, and the risk of cardiovascular disease. The Daily was joined by Dr Kellie Billiniski, Accredited Practising Dietitian and Spokesperson for the Dietitians Association of Australia to discuss the myths surrounding coconut oil.
