Why crowdfunding has mainstream appeal

Crowdfunding a project via the likes of Kickstarter or IndieGoGo used to be the domain of independent creators looking to realise their vision, be it a film, a game or any other product.

But larger studios have quickly discovered that the crowd doesn’t just have cash — it can also offer insights and ideas. Crowdfunding has become for many an integral part of the development process and not just a financial consideration.

Gaming development studio Obsidian Entertainment turned to crowdfunding for its Pillars of Eternity series. Producer Katrina Garsten spoke to Nic about the appeal of crowdfunding and what it meant for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.
