Explorer Alfred Gibson disappeared during Ernest Giles’ second expedition to the deserts of Western Australia in what would become known, funnily enough, as the Gibson Desert, and the launch of Soyuz 1 made Colonel Vladimir Komarov the first cosmonaut to fly to space twice, although unfortunately its return flight would also make him the first person to die as a result of space flight.
